Today's Quick Tip #1 - Always lift with your back straight! Never

lift with your back muscles! Hold heavy objects close to the body

as you lift and don't twist and lift at the same time!

Today's Quick Tip #2 - Pay attention to proper nutrition

but don't take in more calories than you can burn in a

day. If you are overweight, talk to your doctor about

how you can safely lose those extra pounds you are carry-

ing around. Good nutrition goes a long way with

managing pain, but carrying around extra pounds

can increase your pain immensely!

Today's Quick Tip #3 -Take your medications as prescribed

and on time! Don't wait until you are in intense pain to take them.

It is much harder to manage pain once it has increased

to an intolerable level than it is to manage your

pain simply by taking medications at the proper time.

Today's Quick Tip #4 - Find an exercise program that works for you and

stick to it! Try to exercise at least 3 days a week.

Always consult with your doctor first before

starting any exercise program though. It's

important to keep him/her in the loop about

what you are doing, whether it's exercise or diet. Start out slowly at any exercise program.

Today's Quick Tip #5 - Keep an eye on your blood pressure.

Pain causes your blood pressure to increase and some pain

medications do the same. Between these two factors, your

blood pressure can increase to a dangerous level at any time,

even if your blood pressure has previously been healthy.

Blood pressure monitors can be bought at the drug

store now, relatively inexpensively. Buy one and take

it often, especially before exercise.

The Evening That Changed My Life Forever: Chapter Two

E-mail Print PDF

I know that everyone has their pain story; some have worse than others and some, maybe not quite as severe, but everyone who has chronic pain does have a story and it's important to remember not to judge others. Sympathy is not what this story is about. It's about sharing with others that they are not alone. That someone else out there has been through it too and that there are those out there who do understand how devastating, frustrating and downright hopeless life can feel sometimes for those in constant pain. Chronic pain of any kind is not easy to live with and higher your level of pain is, the harder it gets.. Medications of course, help some. Massage, water therapy, biofeedback, trigger point injections, ultrasound treatments and other miscellaneous treatments can all help, but what about the emotional trauma that comes with chronic pain or an accident? So many things can change in your life. Your dreams can go right down the drain, relationships change, your ability to be independent and so much more can all tie into it. This is what chapter two of this story is about. The emotional toll.

The Evening That Changed My Life Forever: Chapter One

E-mail Print PDF

It is almost 10 years now since I injured my back permanently. It seems like yesterday. I've been thinking about how that happened lately, as I near the 10th anniversary of "The Evening That Changed My Life Forever". I remember every little and diminutive detail so clearly. I remember the sinking feeling as I crouched there on the ground in such intense and agonizing pain and realized that I had done something terrible to myself and I knew that life would never again be quite the same. I didn't know how, but I knew.  And I remember how I stood in court and tried to explain to the judge later about what had happened. He asked me why I didn't call an ambulance. Do you know, that even after several years, I couldn't explain to him why not? I have been asking myself the same question, but it was just not my first thought. I was not in a position to be logical. My actions were completely instinctive and emotional but logical to me at the time. I wanted to go home, where it was safe and warm and everything was normal. I wanted to see Greg and have him hold me and take the pain away. I wanted to be okay again. I was in such intense pain, that I wasn't sure if I was going to live or die and I wanted to be near my beloved and in my own home. Now, to someone who has never been through an agonizing injury like I have, that may sound very dramatic and ridiculous, but at the time I didn't really, fully comprehend what had happened to me. I was in shock and in agonizing and overwhelming pain, like nothing I had ever felt before and hope never to feel again.

Happy Holidays!

E-mail Print PDF

Happy Holidays to all of you! I hope that you are all getting through the holidays taking care of yourselves and with minimal pain. I decided I would write down some tips that may help you through the holidays. I know they work. They are things I have learned both in my previous nursing profession with my patients and with my own personal chronic pain. Of course nurses are the worst for taking their own advice. I believe we make the worst patients on the planet. We tend to want to take care of others and forget taking care of ourselves as we should, so I don't always do these things according to plan and as I should. (There I go, shoulding on myself again!) I'm not being nice to myself when I do that, but these tips are worth noting and if even one of them helps one person, it has been worth my time to write this article.
